How do I extend a project with a client?

(Consultant article) How to request more time or scope on your projects by setting up an extension

Updated over 5 months ago

This article is aimed at consultants. If you're looking for help with your client account (for posting projects and hiring), please see the 'Clients' section of the Help centre.

Has the client asked you to do more scope or days, or do you need more time to complete your work?

Extensions are a common part of consulting work, and Leafr makes the process straightforward. Here's how to request and manage project extensions seamlessly.

Requesting extensions with Clients

You'll need client approval for all extensions, but you can request one yourself with all the details. To do this:

  • Navigate to your Project Dashboard by clicking on your live project

  • Look for the Ask to Extend Project button in the top action bar

  • A dialog will open with several fields to complete:

    • Extension Deliverables: Clearly describe what additional work will be done

    • Extension Type: Choose between "Scope Extension" or "Time Extension"

    • Rate: Enter your daily/hourly rate for the extension

    • Extension Cost: Will automatically calculate based on your rate

    • New Project End Date: Select the revised end date for the project

    • Location: Typically set to "Remote" by default

  • When you're done, click Request Extension to submit your request to the client

  • They will get an email, and in-app notification with the extension details which they can accept or reject.

Client extension requests

Clients can also raise extensions with you when you're on a project. They do this in much the same way - from their own project dashboard. When they do this:

  • You'll see a notification on your dashboard

  • Open the extension request to view details including:

    • Extension period

    • Total extension days

    • Day rate

    • Total extension fee

    • Extension scope

  • Choose to Accept or Decline the extension

  • Once you've accepted the extension will be added to your project details

Viewing Active Extensions

Once approved, extensions appear in the Extensions section of your Project Dashboard. You can't edit extensions once they are accepted.
